System Status

May 20, 2022 – 6:59pm

I am very happy to tell you that the dev team has just released three important updates.

1) Display Content for Logged Out Users – Now when you share a link to a flote post or profile on other sites, individuals who are not Flote users or who are but are currently logged out will be able to see that content properly.

2) Link Comments in Notifications to Original Posts – Now when someone comments on your posts, the notification will link back to the original post when clicked.

3) Corrected URL Handling – Now when you paste a URL into a post from Odysee or some other site that has unusual link formatting, it will properly appear as a link.

Please view the “Known Bugs / Issues” panel to see what else is prioritized and coming up.

Apr 7, 2022 – 3:38PM

Hello all… quick message about Followers / Following numbers. You have NOT LOST FOLLOWERS.

Those numbers may be reversed in your case… note the number following and if you did not follow that many people, it’s because the numbers are reversed.

Sorry this is confusing to everyone but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The dev team is still working on correcting the following/follower counts. I just unfollowed and followed a user which updated their followers number. If you unfollow someone and follow them back, it will reset your following count. That’s the work-around.

Our team will do a data pass to recalculate those numbers soon so everyone won’t have to do this manually.

Apr 7, 2022 – 12:53am

Here are the items our development team is working on at the moment:

  • Updating Dark Mode colors in home feed

  • Corrections to outside social media site linking on profiles
  • The addition of a user selectable “NSFW” setting for marking their own profile NSFW
  • Addition of “Comments” to the post engagement popup

Meanwhile, please open the “Known Bugs / Issues” panel below to see an active list of items in progress in order of their priority.

Apr 2, 2022 – 4:25pm

The dev team is currently prioritizing our open issues. There are quite a few, to be sure, but we are collecting, de-duplicating, organizing and prioritizing them for fixing and refinement.

The next big push is going to be getting the mobile view into working order. We are aware this is woefully inadequte at the moment and are prioritizing it for work.

1:39pm

Hey everyone, I hope your day is going well. The dev team is still hard at work this weekend making adjustments to the front and back end and from where I sit, things are looking better and we continue to work. Thank you again for your patience and understanding. We will update here later today with a detailed, itemized list of issues and a link to a new “Known Bugs and Reporting” page where you can review the list of issues we’re aware of and working on.

12:55am

Video and audio uploads have resumed. We’ve still got work to do but things are beginning to shape up. We will see you in the morning with more fixes.

Apr 1, 2022 – 9:14pm

Video and audio uploading will be down for a little while as we do some back-end tweaks. Those capabilities should be restored in short order. Meanwhile, fixes are progressing and the team is focused on feed display speed improvements at the moment.

More information as it’s available.

7:55pm

If you are using a password manager such as Brave, Dashlane, Nord or Apple, etc… it may attempt to automatically auto-fill your Flote login “email address” field with your Flote username.

If this happens, please click the “Recover Password” (turn off auto-fill temporarily if you must) and enter your email addres there to complete the password recovery process.

The new login requires your email address… your username will not work for password recovery.

6:00pm

As we get into evening of Day 1, notifications are working now and the main feed is operating smoothly and our development team continues to grind away on bugs and issues.

I realize this may not mean much to regular folks who are accustomed to sites “just working” but the rate at which bugs are being identified, prioritized, fixed and deployed to production is getting close to 20 or 30 per hour. This rate of revision would have been impossible in our previous version and our team is not only getting it done, but doing so with excitement.

Please stay with us as we continue to work toward a point where Flote works the way you expect it to.

2:49pm

Hey all, things are looking a lot more spiffy now… we found some gremlins that weren’t visible until we were working with live data. Feeds are loading quicker, images are posting… it’s coming together. Thank you for your patience!

12:30pm

As people start to sign in and we get deeper into it today, we see there are a lot of issues that need attention, first of which is the password reset email thing. We’ve upgraded the email service for faster delivery and extended the timeout on the reset link so you should be able to do that more easily now.

Many other items are being worked on including feed issues, image attachment uploading, display of text and controls… a lot of things got broken in the move from our QA environment to the live environment… the dev team is working hard to resolve these issues today and through the weekend and we appreciate your patience while we work through them this morning.

3:48am

The short list of fixes to be worked on immediately has been identified. We are aware of a number of issues and refinements that need to be addressed but these are the top few for the moment:

  1. Timeline Post/Display
  2. Image Attachments
  3. Notifications Display
  4. Set View Default from Global to Friends
  5. Dark Mode Color and Sticky Fixes
  6. Post Body Text Fixes (hashtags, links, text wrapping, etc)
  7. Span / Bot Banning Admin Tool

We appreciate your bug reports and comments… we want to deliver a product to you that we can all be proud of and though we’re not quite there yet, we are very confident that we will get there together soon.

Apr 1, 2022 – 2:31am

The new version of Flote is live and going through its shakedown. You’re going to see some issues, some minor, some significant, while the dev team irons out the kinks.

Caching, uploading, timeline… these things will be resolved in short order and we appreciate your patience and understanding while we work to get them resolved.

Mar 31, 2022 – 7:52pm

There is one remaining issue to resolve relating to our live streaming setup before the team is ready to pull the trigger. This issue may be resolved in a half an hour or it may take until tomorrow.

This is the nature of launching a complex system… and while our entire team is eager to push the system live, we want to make sure this critical element is in place before doing so.

We’ll update you once again later tonight when the decision is made to either launch or push until the morning.

For what it’s worth, I personally sat on the shore at Canaveral Bay, waiting to see a SpaceX launch for three straight days… and when it finally went up, it was worth every moment. We appreciate your patience and we promise you it will be worth the wait.

4:33pm

We’re getting close to the finish line here… just a couple of blocking issues remaining and the team is moving strong toward the finish line.

Stay with us just a little bit longer and we’ll have some news about the final launch shortly. Also if you would, check out “The Drop”, COO Alex Martin’s weekly live show which will be visible on our Facebook and YouTube channels today at 5pm Eastern where we’ll be joined by Spike Cohen and then our CTO Patrick Smith to give us an update on the Flote V1.0 Delivery.

11:19am

The team is still at work this morning. Our objective is to release a site that is stable, scalable and secure… but there’s always that last 5% of finishing work that needs to be done before we can call this ready to go.

The checklist is getting shorter and the remaining issues are mostly look-and-feel related… and we are not even at the 24hr mark yet.

Please hang in there and we appreciate your patience while we complete this process.

Mar 30, 2022 – 9:27pm

The changeover is still in progress and the number of blockers on the checklist is getting smaller. Again, we appreciate your patience while we work through this complex process.

We think you’ll be impressed by how quick the new site is… the reset password functionality is super easy and hey… Dark Mode!

4:44pm

The Bote system has been retired and our dev team is working to bring the new V1.0 production environment online.

For those of you who may be professionals in your own field but not deeply familiar with the process of software development, maybe a bit of explanation would be helpful.

The “catamaran” development, testing and production environments that we’ve been working on have been running in parallel with the “bote” environments (the flote.app you’ve been using) throughout the development process. The transition from one to the other is more involved than simply throwing a switch on a streetcar track, though.

There’s a checklist of items that need to be done before we go live, including domain name changes that need to be made several times, each of which can take from 1 to 24 hours to propagate. Then there’s the process of scaling up the new production environment from a low “dev” capacity to a higher “production” capacity, there’s the disabling of the current platform, final testing of the authentication process, final data migrations (copying and translating your posts, images and videos from the old database to the new, different one), updating deployment pathways so that changes going forward are directed to the proper location, testing the migration, testing the functionality, making whatever repairs and adjustments are needed as a result of the move, and then… finally… re-routing the DNS so that it points to the new production server.

So yeah, it’s not as easy as it seems but our team is hard at work to get it done. At this point they’re about a third through that checklist already and while we’re asking for two days, we expect it to go a bit faster than that. Meanwhile, grab a coffee, pick up a nice book, pet a dog or talk to some plants and we’ll be back really soon!

 1:00pm

Flote will be offline starting at 2:30pm Eastern for up to two days while we make the transition to our V1.0 release. We are hoping to keep the downtime as short as possible.

Please watch here for updates and information related to this downtime and expected resumption of service.
